We had a fairly peaceful night, interrupted in the wee hours by the call of hyenas. At breakfast, we heard from one of the camp staff members that he had heard a lion! All clues for what was to come on our morning game drive.
There had been a kill... water buffalo down. Five lions were feasting on the carcass. Hyenas were gathering, waiting at a respectful distance. Vultures arrived, settling in to wait with the hyenas. Zebras were nervously watching, hesitant to pass the scene on their way to a small watering hole. Water Buffaloes looked on, witnessing the tragic end of their friend. Once the lions were fully satiated, they sauntered off to have a snooze in the shade. The waiting hoard descended... hyenas fighting over bits and pieces. The circle of life... it's not that pretty, but certainly a Nat Geo moment!
Speaking of not pretty... we saw a LOT of hippos today. Actually, you might call them hippo-POO-timuses. They were lounging in a pool of disgusting water, full of feces and mud from all the churning, pooting, pooping hippos.
We saw so much today! How about some birds?
Ox Peckers on Water Buffalo
Can't get enough of the elephants...
More Lions... an entire pride! The big Daddy
The Mamas (there were three)
The Cubs (also three)
Jeep Jam ... Everyone wants to see the elusive Leopard. 30+ Land Rovers came out of nowhere!
And it rained in the afternoon! First major rain we've encountered on this trip.
Enough for tonight. My escort is waiting to take me to my tent!
