Another egg-cellent day

There's no such thing as a Monday holiday when you're running a food business. Life goes on!

While Noah and Rouse got busy with the home kitchen floor project, Susanna let me know that she could use some eggs-tra help in the commercial kitchen. I was egg-cited to have the opportunity to make her day a bit easier. Can you guess there were some eggs to crack? Would you consider 450 to be an egg-cessive amount?

That's what was needed for the late summer vegetable frittata on this week's menu. In addition to cracking that mountain of eggs, I juiced lemons and set about cleaning a bushel of roasted poblano peppers. I worked all afternoon ... four hours total. I was not finished with the peppers, but I was done. Of course, Susanna had been there since morning, and would be there for hours after I left. She certainly has the eggs-traordinary stick-to-itiveness that is required in a commercial kitchen.

Meanwhile, back at the house, Noah and Rouse had acquired new flooring and gathered needed tools. They had watched a "how to" video. They spent the afternoon tearing up the kitchen... pulling out appliances and closet doors, moving shelves, table, chairs, so much kitchen stuff... painstakingly ripping up the current floor in preparation for installing the new one. When I arrived home sometime after 5:30pm, I found them taking a break out back visiting with our brother-in-law Scott, who had come over for a little visit.

By this time of day, the wind was picking up. The temperature was dropping. There was a definite change in the air. By morning, we expected the temperature to drop to the mid-30s. That's right... from 90 to 34 degrees! The farmers had been scrambling, harvesting what they could, preparing for the loss of the last month of their usual late-summer season.

It was too early for sunset, but when Noah and I took Henry Dog for a short walk, the sun was a bright red ball hanging in the sky before it dropped behind the smokey clouds. In fact, the clouds were too thick to allow for any sort of showy sunset.

Susanna arrived home with hot food that she had prepared at work. Roasted lemon chicken, potatoes, and veggies. Once again, we ate in the camper. This time, because the kitchen was a mess!

This is what 38 dozen eggs look like!

Not finished yet!
