Trek to Lingshi via Nyele La Pass

Elevation Changes: 13,255' to 15,912' to 12,467'
Distance:  11.2 miles

The weather (snow) was an issue. It was bedtime last night before we received the definitive word that, yes, the pass was clear. The trek would continue as planned. We woke to another beautiful morning. The crew set the breakfast table outdoors. The porridge was especially tasty. We filled our bellies in anticipation of a challenging day.

The trail followed a stream before crossing a bridge to the right bank. Then we climbed up to the first ridge where we enjoyed breath-taking views of Mt Chomolhari, Mt Jichu Drake, and Tsrim Khang. Next, we had a bit of a break as we hiked across a fairly level valley floor until the final strenuous climb to the Nyele La Pass.

We were told to expect a quick visit at the pass due to the likelihood of strong winds and bitter cold, but were pleasantly surprised by sunshine and mild wind. It was perfect! We had plenty of time to soak it all in, take photos, and hoist our prayer flags. Maybe it was the lack of oxygen, the rush of adrenaline from the climb, or the sheer beauty of that lofty place ... but there was an indescribable feeling of awe and gratitude. We small individuals, standing at 16,000 feet, in the shadow of those giant peaks many thousands of feet higher... as insignificant as a grain of sand on that mountain, but still, part of the whole, in the flow, connected to the universe. Pretty lofty thoughts, indeed!

From the pass we had a long, gradual descent to our campsite at Lingshi, enjoying the panoramic view of the mountain peaks as we walked. Did I mention it was a long walk? I said, "Halleluia!" when we reached our campsite.

Can't get enough of that view!

We saw enough Choughs.

preparing our prayer flags

We wrote the names of all our loved ones on these prayer flags...
...many blessings traveling on the wind from this place.

We all made it!

slippery rocks ... there were a couple of wet incidents

Couldn't have done it without a little help from my friend, Jigme.

Yay! Our camp is in sight!
